The LA County Arts Commission is open to proposals from artists who are residents of Los Angeles County for a public art project in El Cariso Regional Park in Sylmar. The unique aspect of this opportunity is that it excludes artists who have previously received commissions because they want more diversity in their public art collection. The deadline is July 17th and below is the official summary of what they're looking for (more detailed prospectus is available by clicking on the link at the end of the post):

LA
COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION SEEKS AN INNOVATIVE ARTIST TO CREATE A PERMANENT
OUTDOOR ARTWORK FOR EL CARISO COMMUNITY REGIONAL PARK IN SYLMAR
El Cariso Community Regional Park Phase II General Improvements
13100 Hubbard Street, Sylmar, CA 91342
DATE ISSUED: June 5, 2013
DEADLINE: Wednesday, July 17, 2013
OVERVIEW
The
Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Civic Art staff seeks an artist or
artist team to design and create an outdoor artwork for the El Cariso
Community Regional Park, a beloved and important community asset located
in Sylmar, California. This civic art project coincides with a series
of improvements that will update infrastructure and provide additional
recreational services including: two soccer fields, seating areas,
walkways, restrooms, landscaping and a universal play area. Sylmar
residents have expressed a tremendous interest in the future of the
Park. A citizen advisory committee was assembled to provide input and
oversight into the development process.
GOALS OF THE ARTWORK
The
artwork should reflect an aspect of the unique spirit and diversity of
the Sylmar community. It should support and enhance the park user
experience, and contribute to the development of a meaningful civic
space. Artists may choose to create one or more art elements that will
be strategically located in the development area. Because there are few
buildings being built, the artwork must be a free-standing sculpture(s)
or attach easily to other vertical elements like shade canopies or light
poles.
BUDGET
An
all-inclusive budget of $95,000 is projected. This budget includes
artist fees, liability insurance, artist travel, and all costs
associated with the fabrication, delivery and installation of the
artwork.
ELIGIBILITY
This
commission is open to professional artists who are residents of Los
Angeles County. In an effort to grow a diverse collection, artists who
have artwork in the County’s Civic Art Collection will not be eligible
unless this project has a higher budget than the previously commissioned
project.
