Yes! There IS an alternative to Netflix and Blockbuster that's totally free! And you can borrow DVDs of films just released on DVD, not just old classics. Many people do not know that you can borrow flicks-on-disc through the Los Angeles Public Library system. You first need a library card/account and then you can search for films online and request the film to be sent to your local branch; then you just go in and check it out. All totally free. So what's the catch? Well, when you receive an email notification that the film is at your branch, you have a limited time to check it out, and if it's a popular film, there may a waiting period, and when you check out a popular film, you will need to return it within 2-3 days or incur late fees. But if you're disciplined and flexible, you can save lots of money doing this. If you do have Netflix, you can still use this system as a supplement to knock some movies off your queue and save money by downgrading your membership.
